Chennai: A twenty-one-year old woman at Anna Main Road at K K Nagar in the city was affected by dengue recently and five viral fever cases have been reported so far this month, according to civic officials.

Speaking to News Today, K K Nagar Sanitary Officer Selvaraj said, the woman has recovered and the viral fever cases were reported at Rani Anna Nagar, 80 Ft Road, Anna Main Road, Twelfth Sector and Govindansamy Street, MGR Nagar.

“Around 50 workers are taking up door-to-door campaign, requesting residents to keep their surroundings clean giving no room for mosquitoes’ breeding. We have charted out a weekly schedule for our workers to pay individual attention to each house and street,” he said.

The official further said that many houses have wells, and residents have been asked to close them air tight so that mosquitoes do not lay eggs. Also, fish are let into wells and tanks so that they eat the eggs, he added.

At Ashok Nagar, so far no cases have been reported. The civic body workers are inspecting houses from Mondays to Saturdays, said Ashok Nagar Sanitary Officer Pon Murugan.

Ashok Nagar has been divided into 10 sectors. “We visit each and every house. To catch the attention of residents, a team of 10 workers would visit a house at a time. Few would give notice, others remove the unwanted things that lead to mosquito breeding and spraying work is undertaken,” he said.

The official said to control adult mosquitoes, fogging is done on streets. But, it should be done inside the houses also. However, residents do not cooperate with the workers, he said.

When asked whether any case was reported so far, the Sanitary Officer said there has been no such incidents at Ashok Nagar. If any cases are reported in the hospitals, they are communicated to us via email. “Our workers immediately visit the affected person’s house and clean the entire surroundings,” he said.

Awareness programmes are held across the locality, including schools and pamphlets are being issued, said Zone X Health Officer Dr Suganya Devi.

“We have been requesting residents to use mosquito nets and close the wells to avoid spread of mosquitoes,” she said.
