The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reiterated its commitment to reclaiming Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka, a move aimed at addressing the longstanding grievances of Tamil Nadu fishermen. K. Annamalai, the State president of the BJP, emphasized this stance while campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections near Palladam in Tiruppur district.
Annamalai asserted that retrieving Katchatheevu is essential to provide a permanent solution to the challenges faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen. He highlighted the Tamil Nadu BJP’s efforts in advocating for the retrieval of Katchatheevu, including the submission of demands to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar about a year ago. Furthermore, the party has now made public classified documents pertaining to India’s cession of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.
Accusing the Congress party of shrinking India’s boundary, Annamalai alleged that the Katchatheevu issue was non-existent until 1948 when the King of Ramanathapuram held rights over the island. However, following Sri Lanka’s independence, the neighboring country gradually laid claim to Katchatheevu as its territory.
The BJP’s renewed focus on the Katchatheevu issue underscores its commitment to addressing the concerns of Tamil Nadu fishermen and safeguarding India’s territorial integrity. The party’s proactive stance aims to resonate with voters in Tamil Nadu, where the Katchatheevu dispute holds significant political and emotional weight.
As the Lok Sabha elections approach, the BJP’s emphasis on Katchatheevu serves as a rallying point for its campaign in Tamil Nadu. The party seeks to capitalize on public sentiment surrounding the territorial issue, presenting itself as the champion of Tamil Nadu’s interests and asserting its determination to rectify what it perceives as past concessions made by previous governments.
