The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecasted that Chennai will continue to experience evening and night rains for the next two days, driven by a change in wind patterns. P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre at RMC, attributed this weather phenomenon to a trough extending from Telangana to the central Bay of Bengal, running through Rayalaseema and across the west-central Bay of Bengal, situated between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level.This trough has intensified rainfall activity over the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Consequently, Chennai and its suburbs are expected to receive light to moderate rains during the evening and night hours over the next couple of days. The sky is predicted to remain cloudy, providing relief from the recent high temperatures.
In light of the prevailing weather conditions, fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until June 18 due to strong winds over the Gulf of Mannar and the south Tamil Nadu coast.
RMC’s rainfall data indicates that Tamil Nadu has received significant rainfall during the southwest monsoon period from June 1 to 14. The state recorded 64.6 mm of rainfall, significantly higher than the usual 27.4 mm, marking a 136 percent increase. This excess rainfall has been noted across most districts, with the exceptions of Kanniyakumari and Tenkasi.
Despite the rainfall, certain isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu are expected to experience a spike in temperatures, with mercury levels predicted to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal. This variability highlights the complex weather patterns influencing the state during this monsoon season.
