With the increase in cases of dengue and flu, more than 5,000 people are receiving treatment daily in hospitals across Tamil Nadu. Both government and private hospitals have seen a continuous rise in the number of patients seeking treatment for fever, cold, throat infections, and other viral illnesses.
Among these, the flu caused by influenza viruses has become a major concern, as it directly affects the lungs. Health officials advise that if symptoms such as cough, throat allergies, fever, fatigue, body aches, headaches, phlegm, vomiting, or diarrhea occur, people should not ignore them and must seek medical attention immediately.
Similarly, it is essential to seek timely treatment if severe symptoms of dengue, including high fever, headaches, muscle and joint pain, are present. Due to the recent changes in weather, thousands of people are falling ill daily from fever and cold-related ailments. Public health officials have reported that over 5,000 people are being treated in hospitals every day specifically for dengue and flu-like symptoms.
According to public health officials, “Those with mild symptoms do not need antiviral medications or medical tests. Rest and home remedies like steam inhalation and consuming tulsi leaves and karpooravalli leaves are usually sufficient.”
However, for individuals over 65, children under 5, and those with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, antiviral medications like Oseltamivir should be taken under a doctor’s guidance.
Additionally, those experiencing severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, seizures, or reduced urine output should be hospitalized for treatment. Health camps are being conducted in highly affected areas, and officials recommend wearing masks when visiting public places.
