As Chennai experiences heavy rains, it’s vital to prioritize health and safety to avoid waterborne diseases and other related health issues. The city’s monsoon season brings with it challenges like waterlogging, contamination, and a rise in infections. Here are essential medical precautions to help you stay healthy during the rainy season.

Boil Water Before Drinking

Contaminated water is one of the leading causes of diseases during floods and rains. To prevent infections such as typhoid, cholera, and gastroenteritis, it’s essential to boil water before consumption.

“Water can harbor harmful bacteria during rains. Boiling for at least 10 minutes ensures safety,” says Dr. Suresh Kumar, a general physician in Chennai.

Drink Hot Water

Drinking hot water can help flush out toxins and protect against throat infections. It’s a simple yet effective measure, especially when temperatures drop.

“Switching to warm water not only aids digestion but also helps keep throat infections at bay,” shares Dr. Priya Nandhini, a family health expert.

Avoid Street Food
Though tempting, avoid consuming street food during the rainy season. The risk of contaminated food and water is high, and food stalls may not maintain hygiene.

“During rains, foodborne illnesses tend to spike. Stick to home-cooked meals to stay safe,” advises nutritionist Meenakshi Narayan.

Keep Your Feet Dry

Prolonged exposure to water can cause fungal infections or even leptospirosis, especially if you wade through rainwater. Wearing waterproof shoes and drying your feet thoroughly is essential.

“Fungal infections are common during monsoon. Ensure your feet are clean and dry after walking through puddles,” warns dermatologist Dr. Aravind Subramanian.

Maintain Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is crucial. Wash your
hands frequently with soap, especially before meals, after using the restroom, or handling garbage. Rainwater can carry germs that cause illness, so staying clean is key to staying healthy.

“Frequent handwashing is your best defense against the germs you might pick up from rainwater,” adds Dr. Gayathri, a pediatrician.

Stay Indoors During Heavy Downpours

When the rain intensifies, it’s wise to stay indoors as much as possible to avoid accidents, injuries, and exposure to contaminated water. If you must venture out, ensure you carry an umbrella and waterproof gear.

“Flooding increases the risk of accidents and waterborne diseases. Stay home unless absolutely necessary,” suggests health advisor Dr. Rahul Sundar.

Keep Emergency Medications Handy

Those with chronic conditions like asthma or allergies should keep their medications on hand, as damp weather can trigger flare-ups.

“Rains can exacerbate respiratory issues, so keep your inhalers and prescribed medications nearby,” cautions pulmonologist Dr. Shalini Venkatesh.

The monsoon in Chennai is beautiful but can also pose health risks if precautions aren’t taken. By boiling water, maintaining hygiene, and following medical guidelines, you can safeguard your health and enjoy the rainy season without worry.
