Sivakasi, July 1:
A powerful explosion at a firecracker factory in Chinnakamanpatti near Sivakasi claimed the lives of five workers and left four others seriously injured on Tuesday morning.
The blast occurred while workers were engaged in manufacturing activities inside the factory premises. The explosion was so intense that three rooms in the unit were completely destroyed. A massive fire broke out following the blast, making rescue operations extremely difficult.
Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control after several hours. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, with doctors stating that some of them are in critical condition.
Officials have begun a detailed investigation to ascertain the cause of the explosion. Preliminary suspicions point to possible mishandling of explosive materials or overcrowding in the workspace, common issues in the Sivakasi firecracker industry.
The Virudhunagar district administration is coordinating relief and rescue measures. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. The tragic incident has once again raised concerns over safety violations and poor monitoring in firecracker manufacturing units in the region.
Sivakasi, known as India’s fireworks hub, has witnessed several similar accidents over the years, often leading to loss of life and serious injuries. Authorities are under pressure to strengthen safety protocols and enforce stricter regulations.
