The Madurai Bench of the High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to submit a detailed report by July 25 regarding a massive ₹200 crore scam in property tax assessment by the Madurai Corporation.
Allegations surfaced that during 2023 and 2024, property taxes for numerous private buildings were deliberately under-assessed in violation of norms, leading to huge financial irregularities.
Based on a cybercrime report, the case is currently being probed by the Central Crime Branch. So far, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the fraud.
Further investigation revealed the involvement of several senior officials, including five zonal heads and two standing committee chairpersons who have since resigned, reportedly following instructions from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Additionally, seven corporation staff members have been suspended. Police have prepared a list of 55 people — including officials, councillors, and ruling party members — suspected of involvement in the scam.
A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed seeking a CBI inquiry into the matter. Responding to the plea, the court has ordered the formation of a special inquiry team headed by a senior IPS officer, to be established by the IG of South Zone and the Madurai Police Commissioner.
