Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the new two-tier Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. It will take effect from September 22. Modi said the changes will help farmers, MSMEs, the middle class, women, and youth.
In a post on X, he called it a step towards “next-generation GST reforms.” He reminded people that he had spoken about these reforms during his Independence Day speech.
“The Union Government prepared a detailed plan to simplify GST rates and processes. These reforms focus on making life easier for people and strengthening the economy,” Modi wrote.
He said the GST Council, which includes both the Union and State governments, supported the proposals made by the Centre.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the changes after the Council meeting on Wednesday. She said the move would make many daily-use goods cheaper and provide relief to families and industries.
