With heavy monsoon rains lashing Chennai almost every day, many people are unable to go for their regular morning walks or gym routines. But doctors say that fitness and health monitoring can still continue at home with a few simple changes.āThe monsoon should not become an excuse to stop taking care of your body. Indoor fitness is just as important as outdoor workouts,ā said a Chennai-based fitness consultant.
Light indoor exercises
Basic stretching, yoga, skipping, spot-walking or even climbing stairs inside the house can help maintain activity levels. āEven 15 to 20 minutes of gentle movement every day keeps the metabolism active,ā said a physiotherapist in Mylapore.
Check your hydration
People often drink less water during rainy weather, which leads to fatigue and mild headaches. āHydration is not only for summer. Your body still needs water to flush toxins, even when itās cool outside,ā explained a dietician from Velachery.
Monitor basic health signs
Keeping a simple check on your temperature, pulse rate, sleep quality and appetite helps detect early illness. A senior general physician from Anna Nagar said,
āIf you feel tired often, lose appetite or get a mild fever, donāt ignore it ā early care prevents bigger problems during monsoon.ā
Eat clean and home-cooked food
Contaminated street food and rainwater mixing with drains can increase stomach infections. āStick to freshly cooked food at home. Avoid cut fruits or cold chat items from roadside stalls during this season,ā advised a public health expert.
Ventilation and hygiene inside homes
Mosquitoes breed faster in damp corners. Make sure rooms get enough airflow. āA dry home is a healthy home in the monsoon. Just keeping your kitchen and bathrooms moisture-free reduces infections,ā said a GCC health inspector.
Mental health matters too
Being stuck indoors can affect mood and energy. Doctors recommend reading, light music, meditation or talking with friends to stay positive. āFitness is not only about the body ā peace of mind is also part of health,ā a Chennai counselling psychologist said.
Fitness during rainy days is not impossible ā it only needs small adjustments. Simple indoor exercises, clean eating, basic health checks and mosquito prevention can help families stay safe this season.
As the expert summed up,
āWhether inside or outside, health is something you carry with you. The goal is continuity, not location.ā
