Chennai and many suburban areas have been receiving widespread rain since the evening, bringing much-needed relief and delight to residents.
The weather event is driven by a low-pressure system located over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lanka region. This system is expected to move slowly in the northwest direction over the next 24 hours, continuing to influence the weather.
According to the Weather Forecasting Centre, various parts of Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal, will experience light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning.
Areas such as Chennai Central, Egmore, Vepery, Perambur, Sethupattu, T. Nagar, and Marina have seen moderate to heavy rainfall in the past hours. Due to the rains, the city has seen a cooler and more comfortable climate, much appreciated by the local population after a period of dry weather.
The atmospheric conditions have brought down temperatures and freshened the environment significantly. The meteorological department has also forecast the possibility of further rains in many parts of the state in the coming days as the low-pressure system slowly moves and intensifies. Residents and visitors are advised to keep updated with weather advisories for any sudden changes or warnings.
This rainy spell marks a positive change in the northeast monsoon season, improving water reservoirs and groundwater levels while providing a pleasant weather break for the city and surrounding towns.
