A 27-year-old physiotherapist has been arrested for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman who was working as an intern at his clinic in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar.
Police identified the accused as Karthikeyan. According to investigators, he reportedly took the intern to his apartment in Kolathur on Saturday under the guise of attending to an emergency case.
There, he is accused of mixing a sedative in a soft drink, after which he allegedly raped her. The survivor, a physiotherapy student from a private college, had been undergoing internship at his clinic for the past few months.
When she regained consciousness, the woman realised what had happened and informed her parents. A complaint was then lodged at the Kolathur All Women Police Station. Following an inquiry, police arrested Karthikeyan, who has since been produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
In a separate incident, protests erupted outside the Valsaravakkam police station after the family of a Class 7 student, along with student groups, demanded immediate action against a government mini-bus conductor accused of misbehaving with the girl.
The conductor allegedly made obscene gestures towards her during a trip on Friday morning. Police said a case has been registered and efforts are on to apprehend the accused.
