The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has reported a 10% reduction in road accident fatalities across the city in 2025 compared to the same period last year.
Official data show that 469 fatalities were recorded up to December 15, 2025, as against 519 deaths in 2024. In a remarkable improvement, cases of grievous injuries dropped by 66%, falling from 2,093 last year to just 721 this year.
The GCTP attributed the decline to intensified enforcement drives, enhanced patrolling, technology-based monitoring, and continuous awareness campaigns promoting safe driving practices and helmet and seatbelt compliance. Training programmes for police personnel, along with safety awareness sessions for students, bus drivers, and delivery agents, were also cited as key contributors.
Police said stricter action against overspeeding, drunken driving, and helmet violations was ensured through both manual checks and advanced systems such as ANPR cameras, speed radars, and vehicle interceptors. Coordination with various civic departments to improve road conditions, signage, and lighting at accident-prone spots further strengthened safety measures.
The GCTP added that reducing accidents and safeguarding public lives will remain its top priority in the coming years.
