The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has issued licences for 4,015 cats across the city so far, officials said, as part of its ongoing efforts to regulate and protect pet animals within the city limits.According to civic officials, cats—like pet and stray dogs—are recognised as protected pets in Chennai under the Corporation’s animal welfare and licensing framework. Pet owners are required to register their animals with the GCC, following which licences are issued after verification of details, including vaccination and ownership records.
The licensing system is aimed at ensuring better monitoring of pet health, responsible ownership and animal welfare, while also helping civic authorities maintain accurate data on domestic animals in the city. Officials added that residents are encouraged to register their pets to comply with regulations and support the Corporation’s efforts in safeguarding animals and public health.
