Johannesburg, Jan 20: South African allrounder Donovan Ferreira faces an uncertain road to the upcoming T20 World Cup after sustaining a shoulder injury during the SA20.The 24-year-old, representing Joburg Super Kings (JSK) against Pretoria Capitals on Saturday, dived at the cover boundary to stop a potential four off the final ball of the innings. He landed awkwardly on his left shoulder, allowing the ball to cross the rope. Ferreira, who was captaining in place of Faf du Plessis—ruled out due to a thumb injury—later came out to bat but retired hurt after facing just one delivery, struggling to extend his arm. Speaking to broadcasters post-match, Ferreira said he was unwell and planned to undergo a scan on Sunday. Sources from ESPNcricinfo indicate the injury may be a fracture.
The immediate consequence rules Ferreira out of the remainder of the SA20. JSK still have a slim chance of making the playoffs, needing a win against Paarl Royals on Monday to qualify. The injury also casts doubt over Ferreira’s role in South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad. Selected as a finisher, part-time bowler, and backup wicketkeeper, Ferreira’s absence may force selectors to consider alternatives such as Ryan Rickelton—who has scored two centuries in the SA20 but usually bats in the top order—Tristan Stubbs, currently out of form, or Matthew Breetzke. This setback adds to South Africa’s pre-World Cup challenges. Tony de Zorzi is yet to prove his fitness after a hamstring injury in December, though he is expected to play in the three T20Is against the West Indies later this month.
