Che, Apr 9:
Out of 628 nominations filed across 16 constituencies in Chennai, a total of 443 nominations have been accepted following scrutiny conducted on Tuesday, election officials said.
The final figures may see minor changes, as the official data was compiled late in the night.
More than 176 nominations were rejected during the scrutiny process.
Among the constituencies, Perambur recorded the highest number of accepted nominations at 49, while Egmore had the lowest with 19, reflecting varied levels of electoral activity across the city.
There was brief uncertainty over the nomination of Aadhav Arjuna after rival candidates raised objections, alleging that certain companies registered in his wifeās name were not disclosed in his affidavit. However, his nomination was later cleared.
Responding to the allegations, Aadhav Arjuna stated that nominations can only be rejected on proposer-related grounds and asserted that all his assets as of March 25 had been duly declared.
Similarly, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam raised objections to the nomination of Udhayanidhi Stalin in the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency, citing incomplete disclosure of assets.
Despite the objections, his nomination was accepted by election authorities.
In the districts surrounding Chennai, Tiruvallur recorded 171 accepted nominations, Chengalpattu reported 238, and Kancheepuram had 125 accepted nominations.
With the scrutiny process completed, the stage is now set for a keen electoral contest across Chennai and its neighbouring districts.
