Chennai, Apr 21:
Campaigning for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections officially came to an end at 6 PM on Monday, ushering in the mandatory “silence period” ahead of polling scheduled on April 23. The Chief Electoral Officer announced a series of strict regulations to ensure free and fair elections across the State.
Polling will be conducted from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with authorities enforcing provisions under Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which prohibits any form of election campaigning during the 48-hour period preceding voting.
Under these rules, no public meetings, rallies, or election-related gatherings are permitted. Campaigning through media platforms, including television, radio, social media, SMS, and internet-based channels, has also been strictly banned. Officials further clarified that entertainment events such as music shows, film screenings, or public programmes intended to influence voters will not be allowed.
Election authorities warned that violations of these restrictions could lead to imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both.
Strict movement regulations have also been enforced. Political party workers and individuals brought in from outside constituencies have been directed to leave by the campaign deadline. Surveillance teams have been deployed to monitor lodges, guest houses, and other accommodations to prevent unauthorized stays.
Vehicle restrictions have also come into effect. Permissions granted to campaign vehicles, including those used by star campaigners, became invalid after 6 PM on Monday. On polling day, each candidate will be allowed only one personal vehicle, one for the election agent, and one for staff. Transporting voters to polling stations has been prohibited and will attract legal action.
In addition, election-related offices must be located at least 100 metres away from polling booths, with only two persons permitted inside such premises to prevent crowding.
Officials said elaborate monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure compliance with the guidelines. The measures are aimed at maintaining electoral integrity and preventing undue influence on voters as the State prepares for polling later this week.
