Chennai, Apr 22:

A growing number of people are striving to stay fit, and surveys show a significant rise in gym memberships in recent years. While regular exercise is essential for maintaining good health and fitness, it’s equally important to avoid overexertion and dehydration during the summer, as these can negatively impact your health.

Working out is beneficial, but it must be done with a proper routine, especially in hot weather. Changes in body temperature during summer can affect hydration levels. Exercise naturally raises body temperature, generating additional heat. When combined with already high outdoor temperatures, this can put extra stress on the body.

“Your body works harder to regulate temperature during exercise in hot conditions, which increases fluid loss and fatigue,” says many sports health experts. “Hydration and timing become just as important as the workout itself.”

Experts recommend avoiding workouts during peak afternoon hours or immediately after traveling in hot weather. High-intensity cardio sessions in extreme heat can drain energy quickly and lead to electrolyte imbalance. It is also advisable to limit heavy non-vegetarian meals during summer, as they can feel harder to digest in high temperatures.

“Exercising in extreme heat without proper preparation can increase the risk of heat exhaustion, cramps, and even heat stroke,” fitness professionals warn.

Even professional athletes often reduce workout intensity during summer to prevent muscle cramps, heat stroke, and spikes in blood pressure. Instead, they focus on controlled, moderate training sessions.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, Include water-rich fruits and fresh juices in your diet,  Maintain proper electrolyte balance.

Always work out in a well-ventilated gym environment. After being exposed to heat—such as returning from a long ride—allow your body time to cool down and adjust before beginning exercise. Avoid drinking very cold water; room-temperature water is better for maintaining balance in the body. Steam baths should also be avoided during summer, as they can worsen dehydration.

“Consistency matters more than intensity during hot seasons. Adjust your workouts to suit the climate, not your ego,” advise fitness coaches.

In conclusion, staying hydrated, avoiding peak heat hours, and focusing on low- to moderate-intensity workouts are the keys to maintaining fitness safely during summer.

Stay hydrated, stay cool, and train smart.
