Chennai, Apr 24:
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election has delivered a striking narrative within the 16 constituencies of the Greater Chennai Corporation, where voter turnout surged dramatically — prompting talk of a long-awaited urban awakening.
With polling touching 81.34%, a massive jump from 59.40% in 2021, Chennai has bucked its long-standing reputation for voter apathy. This time, participation was not limited to isolated pockets — every constituency crossed the 70% mark, with many breaching 80% in the April 23 polls.
Among constituencies, Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar topped the charts with an impressive 87.12% turnout, followed closely by Perambur at 86.72%. Kolathur and Virugampakkam each recorded 83.84%, while Villivakkam stood at 83.58%. Anna Nagar registered 83.44%, Egmore 82.71%, and T. Nagar 81.82%.
This sweeping rise in participation has left political observers debating its implications. Whether it reflects a deeper political churn, a youth-driven shift, or simply cleaner electoral rolls remains to be seen.
