Chennai, June 9:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered an FIR into alleged irregularities in Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) transformer procurement tenders, involving officials, unnamed public servants and private contractors.
The case pertains to tenders floated between 2021 and 2023 for the supply of distribution transformers ranging from 25 KVA to 500 KVA, which allegedly caused a loss of about ₹397 crore to the State exchequer.
According to officials, the FIR was registered by the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch in Chennai following a direction from the Madras High Court for a fresh probe into corruption allegations.
The complaint was based on petitions filed by Arappor Iyakkam and others, seeking an independent investigation into the tender process. The agency has booked the case under charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
CBI has appointed a Deputy Superintendent of Police as the Investigating Officer and has begun further inquiry into the alleged irregularities.
