Chennai, June 27:

Veteran Tamil filmmaker-actor K. Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday following a massive cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 73. His demise has sent shockwaves across the Tamil film industry and among fans, marking the end of an era shaped by his distinctive storytelling and relatable characters.

He is survived by his wife Poornima Bhagyaraj, son Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and daughter Saranya. Family sources said he had been admitted after experiencing severe health complications earlier in the day.

Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj on January 7, 1953, Bhagyaraj carved a unique niche in Indian cinema as a director, writer, and actor. He worked in more than 75 films and directed over 25, gaining popularity for his middle-class narratives laced with humour and social commentary.

Bhagyaraj rose to prominence in the late 1970s and 1980s, delivering several memorable films and earning a reputation as a filmmaker who understood audience sensibilities. His film Mundhanai Mudichu (1983) won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, further cementing his position in Tamil cinema.

Apart from cinema, he also had a brief stint in politics and was known for his writing, including novels and a popular weekly magazine. Over the decades, Bhagyaraj remained an influential figure, inspiring a generation of filmmakers with his simple yet effective storytelling style.

His passing leaves a significant void in the Tamil film fraternity, with tributes expected to pour in from across the country.
