Kumbakonam, July 9:

CPI State Secretary M Veerapandian on Wednesday called upon all political parties in Tamil Nadu to unite in safeguarding the state’s Cauvery water rights and urged Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to immediately convene an all-party meeting to discuss the Mekedatu dam issue.

Addressing reporters in Kumbakonam, Veerapandian stressed the need for a collective political approach to counter Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam project, which he said could impact Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water. “All parties must come together to protect the state’s water rights. The Chief Minister should convene an all-party meeting without delay,” he said.

Veerapandian also raised concerns over the Union Government’s draft National Food Security (Amendment) Bill, which proposes replacing the existing monthly quota of 35 kg rice per Antyodaya Anna Yojana household with 7 kg per person. He warned that such a move could adversely affect marginalised sections dependent on the scheme.

On the issue of farmers, the CPI leader said the state government could consider deferring crop loan waivers until its financial situation improves. However, he alleged that government staff were demanding bribes from farmers for availing benefits and during procurement processes, and urged the Chief Minister to take strict action to curb such practices.

Criticising Minister S Keerthana over a recent incident involving a student at a government school, Veerapandian said English should be viewed only as a means of communication and not as a measure of knowledge. He argued that the minister should have focused on promoting Tamil among students and avoided actions that might embarrass them. He also urged the Chief Minister to advise ministers against engaging in what he termed “cheap publicity.”

Meanwhile, Veerapandian welcomed the closure of Tasmac outlets as part of the state’s prohibition efforts, but appealed to the government to ensure alternative employment opportunities for affected workers.

Reiterating his stance, he called on all political parties in Tamil Nadu to jointly oppose the Mekedatu dam project and safeguard the state’s rightful share of Cauvery water.
