Tiruvarur, July 20:
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has reaffirmed its commitment to the ruling alliance led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, signalling continued political backing ahead of the upcoming local body elections and Assembly bypolls.
The decision was announced on Sunday following the party’s general council meeting in Tiruvarur. Minorities Welfare Minister Shahjahan said a resolution was adopted to remain aligned with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and support its leadership in the forthcoming electoral contests.
The announcement assumes significance as the ruling coalition is yet to formally consolidate itself into a structured alliance, with no agreed name or unified framework. Differences persist among several partners, including the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, particularly over issues such as the alleged poaching of MLAs from the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Earlier, IUML president KM Khader Mohideen had indicated that a final decision on alliances would be taken only after the announcement of bypolls and local body elections. He had also emphasised the party’s expectation of adequate representation in future electoral contests.
Sunday’s resolution reflects IUML’s intent to secure a stronger foothold within the alliance while negotiating a fair share of seats in the upcoming local body polls.
