Chennai, Sept 1:
The AIADMK will hold a crucial meeting of its district secretaries at the party headquarters in Chennai on September 6, as General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami steps up efforts to reorganise and strengthen the party following its setback in the 2026 Assembly election.
The meeting assumes significance as the first major interaction with district-level leadership after Palaniswami completed his review of the party’s electoral performance. The discussions are expected to focus on the reasons for the defeat, the functioning of the party organisation at the grassroots and measures required to rebuild the cadre base.
Palaniswami has already undertaken district-wise reviews as part of efforts to revive the organisation following the election setback. Earlier reviews were aimed at assessing the party’s performance and preparing the organisation for the political challenges ahead.
The September 6 meeting is also expected to provide district secretaries an opportunity to convey their assessments of the election campaign, local-level organisational issues and the response among voters. The leadership could seek detailed feedback on areas where the party performed below expectations and identify constituencies requiring greater organisational attention.
The meeting comes at a politically challenging time for the AIADMK, with the party seeking to retain its organisational strength amid competition from the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Several former AIADMK leaders and functionaries have also moved towards the ruling party in recent months, adding to the pressure on the organisation.
Palaniswami has been attempting to project the AIADMK as the principal political alternative to the TVK government. In his recent political engagements, he has sharply criticised the government over issues including the State’s finances and power supply, while positioning the AIADMK as the party capable of raising people’s concerns.
Against this backdrop, the September 6 meeting is likely to be closely watched for indications of the AIADMK’s organisational strategy and its approach to rebuilding the party after the Assembly election. The district secretaries, who play a key role in maintaining the party’s grassroots machinery, are expected to have a significant role in the proposed organisational consolidation.
The meeting could also set the tone for the AIADMK’s political activities in the coming months, particularly its efforts to strengthen the cadre, retain its traditional support base and counter the growing political presence of TVK.
