Kathmandu, Sept 2:

The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has crossed 1,000, with nearly 4,000 people still missing, as rescue teams race to reach isolated communities and authorities warn of further flooding in parts of the country.

The death toll rose to 1,003 on Tuesday as security forces recovered more bodies from flood-hit areas, according to authorities. The disaster was triggered by an ice and rock collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, unleashing massive quantities of water and debris and causing widespread destruction across mountainous areas.

The floods have destroyed bridges, roads and hydropower infrastructure, severely disrupting transport and communications. Around 12,000 people have been rescued so far, while more than 21,300 security personnel have been deployed for rescue, relief and recovery operations. Authorities are continuing searches for thousands of people who remain unaccounted for.

The scale of the disaster has also prompted concern over the vulnerability of Nepal’s mountainous communities to increasingly extreme weather events. Officials are strengthening early-warning mechanisms and emergency preparedness systems in an effort to provide communities with more time to evacuate when sudden floods and landslides threaten.

Nepal has simultaneously stepped up its international campaign for climate-related compensation, arguing that countries responsible for a large share of historical greenhouse-gas emissions should contribute to the cost of disasters suffered by vulnerable nations. Kathmandu has described the demand as a matter of moral responsibility rather than charity.

The government says the devastation has exposed the enormous economic and humanitarian costs of climate-related disasters in a country with limited resources. Apart from the loss of lives, the destruction of roads, bridges and power infrastructure is expected to have a lasting impact on local economies and reconstruction efforts.

With thousands still missing and rescue teams continuing to recover bodies, the immediate priority remains locating survivors and providing food, shelter and medical assistance to affected communities. The disaster has also renewed calls for stronger regional cooperation, improved early-warning systems and greater international support for climate-vulnerable countries. These are written in a straight newspaper style, with separate headlines, datelines, detailed leads and expanded context.
