DJs replace live orchestras at Chennai wedding receptions

Chennai, Sept 4:

The familiar sound of live light-music orchestras performing popular Tamil film songs at wedding receptions in Chennai is increasingly giving way to high-energy DJ shows, reflecting a change in the way younger couples want to celebrate their big day.

For decades, a live orchestra was almost a fixture at grand wedding receptions. Singers and musicians would take the stage and perform evergreen hits of M.S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, A.R. Rahman and other composers, often taking requests from the audience. The music created a relaxed atmosphere in which guests could enjoy the songs while watching the performers.

That tradition is now facing stiff competition from DJs, who offer powerful sound systems, lighting effects, large LED screens, remixes and non-stop dance numbers.

ā€œEarlier, the orchestra was one of the main attractions at a wedding reception. Families would sit and listen to singers perform their favourite songs. Now, many youngsters want the entire crowd to get up and dance,ā€ said a Chennai-based orchestra organiser.

Another musician said the change was not necessarily the end of live music.

ā€œPeople still love film songs and melodies. The difference is in how they want to experience them. A live orchestra requires people to sit and listen, while a DJ creates an immediate party atmosphere,ā€ he said.

Wedding planners say the preference of the younger generation is increasingly influencing entertainment choices. Couples often want their reception to resemble a celebration or party, with friends and relatives joining the dance floor.

ā€œThe bride and groom are now at the centre of the entertainment. They prepare dance performances, choose their playlists and want their friends to join them. A DJ fits naturally into that format,ā€ said a Chennai wedding planner.

Live orchestras, however, have adapted rather than disappeared. Several Chennai music groups now offer combinations of live orchestra, karaoke, instrumental performances, fusion music and DJ services, allowing families to choose different formats for the same event.

Veteran orchestra musicians say there is still a special charm in hearing a familiar film song performed live.

ā€œWhen a singer sings an old favourite and the musicians play it live, there is an emotional connection that a recorded track cannot completely reproduce. That experience should not disappear,ā€ said a senior musician.

For many older guests, the orchestra remains part of the memories associated with weddings of the past. For the younger generation, however, the DJ console, pulsating lights and dance floor have become symbols of a modern reception.

The shift does not necessarily mean that Chennai’s wedding music tradition is disappearing. Instead, it reflects a broader change—from listening to music on stage to participating in the music on the dance floor.
