Music director Sam CS has hit the century mark with Sardar 2, but unlike most milestones, this one was never part of his plan. In fact, Sam says he did not even realise he had reached 100 films until the wishes began pouring in.
Celebrating the milestone with the media in Chennai, Sam cut a cake and looked back on a journey that has seen him work across a wide range of films and genres. “I have never counted my films. I only remember my first film. I didn’t even know what my 35th or 50th film was,” he said.
Interestingly, more than half of Sam’s 100-film journey has been through background scores rather than full-fledged albums. Films such as Kaithi and Vanangaan are among the projects where his music has played a crucial role in shaping the mood and intensity of the narrative.
Sam has also carved a niche by collaborating with several debut directors, many of whom came to him with fresh and unconventional ideas. While not every experiment turned out as expected, he considers even the setbacks valuable lessons. “Nothing can teach you more than failure,” he said, describing the failures along the way as an important part of his growth as a musician.
For Sam, however, the number 100 is not a finish line. It is simply another milestone in a journey driven by his love for music. “It’s not going to stop here. I’m going to continue working. It’s not about the count. I do music because I love it,” he said.
That passion is reflected in his everyday routine. With a studio at home, Sam spends most of his waking hours immersed in music. A century of films may now be behind him, but for Sam CS, the score is far from over.
