139 migrants die after boat capsizes off Djibouti

Djibouti, Oct 13
At least 139 migrants, including 15 children, have died after an overcrowded boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti while carrying people towards Yemen, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Around 84 people were reported missing, raising fears that the death toll could increase.
The boat was carrying more than 300 people when it capsized during the night of October 8–9. The migrants were travelling along the dangerous maritime route connecting the Horn of Africa with Yemen, a journey undertaken by people seeking employment, better living conditions or opportunities elsewhere.
The IOM said the incident was among the latest tragedies involving migrants attempting to cross the sea in overcrowded and unsafe vessels. Search and rescue efforts were undertaken following the capsizing, but the large number of missing passengers complicated the operation.
The route from Djibouti towards Yemen remains heavily used by migrants from the Horn of Africa, particularly Ethiopians, despite the dangers associated with the crossing. Many undertake the journey in the hope of reaching the Arabian Peninsula, where they seek work and opportunities to support their families.
Migrants making the crossing face risks including overcrowding, inadequate safety equipment, adverse sea conditions and exploitation by smugglers. Those who survive shipwrecks may also face further dangers, including detention, abuse and difficulties accessing medical assistance.
The latest disaster has renewed concerns among humanitarian organisations about the safety of people travelling on irregular migration routes. International agencies have repeatedly called for stronger action against smuggling networks and improved access to safe and legal migration pathways.
The number of people confirmed dead underscores the human cost of dangerous sea crossings. With dozens still missing, rescue and recovery operations remain critical, while authorities and humanitarian agencies face the challenge of identifying victims and assisting survivors.
