The allegation by American singer Mary Millben that the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), led by Abhijeet Dipke, is funded by US donors opposed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has added an international dimension to the political controversy over electoral roll revisions. Millben has urged Indian youth to organise peaceful counter-protests, while Dipke has objected to what he considers interference by foreign nationals in India’s internal affairs. These are serious claims and counterclaims that deserve scrutiny rather than political point-scoring. An allegation of foreign funding cannot be treated as proof without verifiable evidence, just as questions about electoral procedures cannot be dismissed merely because they are raised by a new political outfit.
The larger issue at the heart of the protests is the integrity of electoral rolls and the confidence citizens place in the Election Commission. The revision of voter lists is a legitimate administrative exercise, but it must be transparent, fair and open to scrutiny to ensure that no eligible voter is excluded. Equally, political organisations and individuals receiving funds must comply with applicable laws and disclose their sources wherever required. If there is credible evidence of unlawful foreign funding, the competent authorities should investigate it and make their findings public. Neither political allegiance nor criticism of the government should determine how such allegations are examined.
India’s democracy is strong enough to withstand criticism from within and outside the country, but its institutions must be allowed to function without intimidation or undue influence. Foreign citizens are entitled to express opinions, but their claims about India’s political affairs should be judged by the evidence supporting them. Similarly, domestic political movements must answer legitimate questions about their funding and activities. The government, the Election Commission and the protesting groups all have a responsibility to uphold democratic norms. Ultimately, the focus should remain on verifiable facts, electoral transparency and the protection of every eligible citizen’s right to vote, rather than a war of accusations that risks distracting from these fundamental concerns.
