Chennai, Oct 19:
Flower prices have risen across Tamil Nadu ahead of Ayudha Pooja and Saraswati Pooja on Monday, October 19, as festive demand increases and concerns over rainfall and supply add to the pressure on prices. Markets across the State have witnessed increased purchases by households, traders and temples preparing for the celebrations.
The rush was particularly noticeable at Madurai’s Mattuthavani flower market, where jasmine prices touched Rs 1,800 per kg on Saturday morning before easing to Rs 1,500 later in the day. Traders said prices could rise further if rainfall affects harvesting, transportation and arrivals from flower-growing areas. Demand has picked up after the relatively subdued Purattasi period, when fewer major festival occasions kept purchases and prices comparatively low.
The increase is being driven by the traditional demand for flowers for poojas, temple offerings and household celebrations. Flowers grown in Madurai and neighbouring districts are supplied to markets across Tamil Nadu, while some varieties are also sent to other States and exported. Traders said fluctuations in arrivals, along with the seasonal rise in demand, could influence prices in the run-up to the festival.
At the Mattuthavani market, Arabian jasmine (Pichi) was sold at Rs 900–1,000 per kg, while Mullai jasmine fetched Rs 800–900. Kanakambaram was priced at Rs 1,500–1,800 per kg, Nerium oleander at Rs 500–600, Damask rose at Rs 350–400, tuberose at Rs 300–350 and chrysanthemum at Rs 200–300. Bael leaves and sweet marjoram were sold at Rs 200–250 per kg, while cockscomb fetched Rs 120–150.
Marigold was priced at Rs 80–120 per kg, while holy basil and Bermuda grass were sold at Rs 50–70 per kg. Lotus flowers were available at Rs 20–25 apiece. Traders expect prices to remain volatile as purchases gather pace ahead of Ayudha Pooja and Saraswati Pooja, with rainfall and market arrivals likely to determine the extent of further increases.
The price movement at Madurai reflects the seasonal pressure on flower markets during the festive period. However, prices vary across districts depending on local production, transportation costs, demand and the availability of individual varieties.
