Chennai,Oct 29:
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the cases against Gem Granites owner Veeramani has begun questioning Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam president John Pandian following allegations that he was involved in mediation attempts connected with a dispute involving the businessman.
The questioning follows a complaint by Congress functionary Ranjan, who reportedly alleged that John Pandian had been involved in negotiations in the Veeramani matter. Based on the allegation, the SIT issued a summons to Pandian and commenced its inquiry.
Pandian had earlier said that he became involved in discussions concerning a dispute between Veeramani and a woman identified as Shanthi at the invitation of a Congress functionary. He also maintained that he had no knowledge of the allegations concerning the sexual abuse of minor girls.
The SIT is examining the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the reported mediation. The questioning is part of the wider investigation into the cases registered against Veeramani. The allegations against individuals are subject to investigation, and the questioning does not by itself establish wrongdoing.
Veeramani, the owner of Gem Granites, has been arrested in connection with allegations of sexual offences against minor girls. The cases have triggered a wider investigation into the alleged offences and the handling of complaints against him.
According to reports, complaints from 12 girls have led to the registration of eight cases against Veeramani. Eight people have been arrested in connection with the cases, while lookout notices have been issued against five people as part of the investigation.
The SIT is examining not only the allegations of sexual abuse but also questions surrounding the handling of earlier complaints and whether any individuals attempted to influence or obstruct the investigation.
The probe has also drawn attention to allegations that complaints against Veeramani were not properly pursued earlier. Investigators are examining the relevant records, statements and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and determine whether further action is warranted.
The police have indicated that the investigation is nearing a crucial stage and that a chargesheet is expected to be filed in the relevant case. The SIT is continuing to examine the various allegations and the possible roles of those connected with the matter.
