Wind up Jaya death case by 24 Oct: Govt to panel

Chennai: The Tamilnadu government has ordered the one-man commission of Justice (Retd) Arumughasamy probing the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to wind up by 24 October, said sources.

After the death of Jayalalithaa in 2016 after being treated in Apollo Hospitals for 75 days, where she died in December the same year, the one-man commission was set up by the State government on 25 September 2017.

Arumughasamy started his investigations two months later on 22 November.

The State government had given the commission a time-frame of three months when investigations commenced. However, this was extended twice, by six months first, followed by another four months.

Arumughasamy has questioned V K Sasikala, her kin, doctors who treated Jayalalithaa and even made a visit to the ward where she was treated.

The extension that the State government gave the commission comes to an end 24 October and the government has not indicated another extension but has asked the commission to complete the probe and submit its report.

Marina case withdrawn
Sources claimed that the case filed in the Madras High Court asking for a ban on building samadhis in the Marina was withdrawn by the petitioner today.
In 2016, then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was laid to rest at the world’s second longest beach near the memorial of M G Ramachandran, a CM himself. A case was filed by S Jayaseelan, 48, an advocate, on 16 May this year against raising a permanent structure there. He filed a public interest litigation in the Madras HC seeking a direction to the Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation to remove the mortal remains of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa from Marina beach and bury it in a non-coastal area. He also sought a direction restraining the Centre as well as State government from raising a memorial for her in the present site of burial.
The fact that the case has been withdrawn has led to rumours regarding the health condition of DMK leader M Karunanidhi, who at present is hospitalised at Kauvery Hospital here.
