Roaming cattle at Chrompet Shanthi Nagar Second Street.

Garbage problems are a part and parcel of almost all the neighbourhoods in Chennai. But they had reached a tad worse in Chrompet Shanthi Nagar as a resident alleged that even after making formal complaints to the highest authority of the neighbourhood, efforts for a solution have not kickstarted.

Explaining the proximity of the issue the resident also claimed that those residing in that locality are getting ready for something even severe in the days to come.

Speaking to News Today, M N Srinivasan Rao, an Airport, Authority of India (AAI) staff residing at Shanthi Nagar Second Street, said, “For a month now, the locality, which comprises of our street, Bhashyam Street and Radha Nagar Main Road is reeling under severe garbage problems. No one is coming to our area for garbage collection despite repeated complaints. When we find the workers, we at times shout at them only to feel bad later as they are just contract workers appointed for that day alone. They don’t even know the problems faced by us.”

“As the garbage pileup is getting bigger, cattle menace is on the rise. Because of the cattle here, the girl students of Vaishav College, who walk though this stretch, face a lot of hardships as the animals always intimidate them,” he added.

“As a last step, I called Pallavaram MLA E Karunanidhi three times in the last few days and told him my problems. When nothing productive happened, I also met him on 21 February morning when he was near the mosque in our locality. At that time, he assured me he will immediately inform the matter to the Pallavaram Municipal Commissioner who will send workers for the task. But still, no one has ever approached the locality. So, we request authorities to sort out the issue at least now,” he ended.

This news report is based on the inputs of M N Srinivasan Rao, an Airport, Authority of India) staff residing at Chrompet Shanthi Nagar Second Street. He is our Neighbourhood Journalist of the Week.
