Students of Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering receiving the first prize in InnoWAH competition from IIT Madras, director Bhaskar Ramamurthi during the valedictory function of enterpreneurial summit organised by PALS in the city recently.

Chennai: Additional Chief Secretary to Government V Irai Anbu said the government of Tamilnadu has announced a conducive start-up policy but students need to have the right spirit to derive benefit.

Speaking at the valedictory ceremony of enterpreneurial summit on the theme ‘Our Academic institutions are gold mines for nurturing budding entrepreneurs’, organised by Pan IIT Alumni Leadership Series (PALS), an educational initiative of all IIT alumni, Irai Anbu said students should be inspired early in their life to be entrepreneurs.

He urged that academic environment must be made conducive for expressing creativity and the right kind of faculty must be employed in the E-cells.

IIT Madras director, Bhaskar Ramamurthi emphasised on the importance of experiential learning. “He commented on academic curricula being constraining on students and urged colleges to consider experiential learning methods. If even 15 per cent of our engineering students become entrepreneurs, the face of India will be changed,” he added.

The event was followed by the awards ceremony, in which prizes and certificates, won for various events over the year were given to the students and partner institutes. The four teams which won the top 3 positions in the ‘innoWAH’ Innovation Challenge competition received their prizes.

The first prize was bagged by Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering (SVCE) for novel Corn based Husk Products as Substitute for Plastics, second prize was won by Rajalakshmi Engineering College (REC)- Hybrid Effluent Water Treatment Technology To Obtain Reusable Water and the third prize was shared by KCG College of Technology Chennai for the project on Fabrication of Solar powered Wireless Sweeping Machine and RVS College of Engineering and Technology for their Safe and Healthy Smart Charger.
