Alok Ojha, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Central Division and Senior Post Master, Ponnurangam at the sapling progamme held in T Nagar Head Post Office.

Chennai: In a move that is gaining appreciation from many, the Postal Department is planting tree saplings and placing water bowls for birds and domestic animals, at the T Nagar head post office and various other post offices situated within its jurisdiction.

These were done on the first day of April, under the name ‘April Cool’, it is said. According to a press release, Alok Ojha, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Central Division and Senior Post Master, Ponnurangam, took part in the event and planted saplings of guava, mango, neem and blackberry in-and-around the premises situated in Sivagnanam Street.

Speaking on this, an official said, “We were particular in planting mango and neem, as they live for a long time, provide shelter and also preserve water in the ground. Over 100 such saplings were planted in the neighbourhood office and other locations in the city.”

The department has also taken to providing respite for birds and animals like cows, dogs, cats and other strays, in lieu of the sweltering heat.

“To help thirsty birds and animals, water bowls have been kept at the terraces and in the grounds at the post offices.
Our superiors have given clear instructions on the watering duties, while few staffers have been allotted the responsibility of filling up the bowls,” she said.

As for their maintenance, she stated, “The saplings will be monitored and preserved from any kind of encroachment and other damages.” The said initiatives are now being lauded by customers visiting the facilities.

Seshachalam, a pensioner at the post office here, said, “The move is a timely one. The practice of growing plants is almost non-existent now. I appreciate the efforts of the Postal Department in this regard.”
