Chennai: A day after the DMK issued a formal invitation to Makkal Needhi Maiam chief and actor Kamal Haasan to participate in the rally to protest the Citizenship Amendment Act here on 23 December, many in the political circles said this could be the beginning of the two parties coming together with Assembly elections due in 2021.
Speaking to News Today, MNM spokesperson Murali Appas, said, ”Please don’t jump the gun. Since it is a national issue that needs immediate attention and affects the secularism and sovereignty of our nation, we agreed for the invitation. Our party was formed to provide a good alternative to two Dravidian parties. Our core philosophy is to ensure we form a government in the State and serve the people. There is no going back on it”.
He even said, ”If such an idea is being floated about the protest, we may even rethink on our participation on 23 December”.
Sources close to MNM said, ”It was Kamal Haasan who first gave his voice against CAA. We were the first to knock the doors of Supreme Court against CAA. Our leader has taken a serious view of the whole issue”.
Kamal Haasan thinks the government is stoking the fire of Satyagraha by detaining questioning minds like historian Ramachandra Guha and activist-politician Yogendra Yadav, they add.
