Chennai: Despite Tamilnadu having the third highest Omicron cases in India, the State government on Friday did not impose any new restrictions or relaxations to the existing Covid curfew.
However, the restrictions to visit beaches on 31 December and 1 January will continue.
In view of expert opinion that the coronavirus spread, including that of the Omicron strain, may increase if public gathered in large numbers during festivals, people must avoid crowding and strictly follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour, Tamilnadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said.
Stalin, after chairing a high level consultative meeting appealed to the people to fully cooperate with the government to curb the virus spread.
He asked people to avoid gathering in public places and to maintain social distance. People were also asked to wear masks once they step out of their houses and to get vaccinated at the earliest. Shops, commercial establishments and theatres were asked to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued.
With Tamilnadu reporting 34 cases of Omicron variant so far and considering Christmas and New Year celebrations besides the harvest festival of Pongal next month, Stalin held a meeting of medical, public health experts and top officials at the Secretariat.
