Chennai: A burst of north-easterly winds over the Palk Straits and the Gulf of Mannar grazing the adjoining coast have brought moderate to heavy rain over parts of Tamilnadu from Friday, especially over the Delta and southern districts. More rains have been predicted for the weekend.
A trough is located over southern parts of South India, and northeasterly winds from the Bay of Bengal will bring humidity over the region on Saturday. Heavy rain is likely over isolated places of south coastal Tamilnadu. Accordingly, isolated rains, thunderstorms and lightning are very likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Kerala during the next 24 hours, while heavy rains may lash isolated places of south coastal Tamilnadu.
The Regional Meteorological Center has cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea for the next 24 hours due to prevailing atmospheric circulation in the Gulf of Mannar. Also, several districts of Tamilnadu witness heavy rains along with thunderstorms.
An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update this morning said Nagapptinam received heavy rainfall of 8 cm until 5.30 pm yesterday, Karaikal (5 cm) and Thanjavur and Cuddalore (two cm each), apart from parts of Kerala.
