Chennai: Taking a serious view of two road accidents that took place in Chennai on Saturday and Sunday, the city police have launched a crackdown against illegal racing and underage driving.

In the first incident, a 76-year-old man in Adyar died, after he was hit by a Benz which had lost control.

In the second, a car crashed into a supermarket in Anna Nagar late on Sunday night leaving two men injured, one of them severely.

CCTV camera footage of the accident soon went viral on social media and police, who suspect youngsters involved in racing to have caused the accident, have launched a search for the vehicle’s three occupants.

Thirumangalam traffic Investigation wing said two cars were engaged in speed racing and the driver in one car lost control of the vehicle and dashed into the supermarket.

Last month, two boys took their father’s high-end motorcycle without his knowledge and were killed on the spot when they rammed a stationary truck on Tiruvallur High Road on the city’s outskirts.

Underage driving is a common sight on city roads and its suburbs. Parents themselves are seen coaching children without realising that underage driving is an offence. Minors are seen driving cars with friends.

To curb the menace, the police have formed special teams and said strict action would be taken against such acts.
