Water level in Chennai reservoirs nearing full capacity

Recent and consistent rainfall in the capital city of Chennai is not only bringing a welcome relief from soaring temperatures but is also revitalizing the dwindling water storage in critical reservoirs on the outskirts, ensuring a more secure water supply for the city.

Over the last 10 days, intermittent rains have graced the areas of Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur Districts, significantly boosting the inflow of rainwater into the two major drinking water reservoirs—Puzhal and Chembaramabakkam—that cater to the water needs of Chennai Metro City.

The impact of the rainfall extends beyond the immediate vicinity of Chennai, reaching lakes in Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur districts. Public works officials have reported a notable rise in the water level of Chembarambakkam Lake, which crossed 22 feet on Wednesday. This development is particularly crucial as Chembarambakkam Lake plays a pivotal role in meeting the drinking water requirements of the Chennai metropolis.

Chennai’s water supply is sourced from multiple lakes, including Poondi, Cholavaram, Puzhal, Kannankottai-Therwai Kandikai, Chembarambakkam, and Veeranam. The recent heavy rains in the catchment areas of these lakes have resulted in a substantial increase in water inflow, positively impacting the overall storage levels.

Chembarambakkam Lake, with a total capacity of 3.645 Thousand Million Cubic Feet (TMC), is particularly significant in the water supply chain. Currently, the lake is experiencing an inflow of 301 cubic feet, with a discharge of 162 cubic feet. The water level has risen to 22 feet against its full capacity of 24 feet. Officials indicate that if the inflow continues to increase, the release of excess water may be heightened to manage the reservoir’s levels.

The resurgence of water levels in these reservoirs is a promising development for a city that has grappled with water scarcity concerns in recent times. As the lakes continue to receive substantial inflow, the authorities are cautiously monitoring the situation to ensure optimal water management and prevent potential flooding.

While the immediate impact is a bolstered water supply for Chennai, the sustained inflow and effective reservoir management will play a crucial role in mitigating future water scarcity challenges. The recent rainfall serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness between weather patterns, water resources, and the well-being of urban communities.
