In a significant move aimed at decongesting traffic in the state’s capital and enhancing passenger convenience, the Tamil Nadu Transport Department announced on Monday that all government and private buses heading to southern districts via Chengalpattu and Tindivanam will now operate exclusively from Kilambakkam Bus Terminus (KCBT) starting January 30. This decision is part of a broader initiative to streamline bus operations and improve the overall transportation infrastructure in the region. The directive signifies a pivotal change in the operational dynamics of south-bound buses, with Kilambakkam emerging as the designated hub for services traversing the southern districts. However, it’s important to note that buses plying via the East Coast Road (ECR) will continue to operate from Koyambedu Bus Stand. Additionally, buses traveling via Poontamalli to destinations like Vellore, Hosur, Ambur, and Tirupathur will maintain their operations from Koyambedu Bus Stand as usual. The shift comes following the inauguration of the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. The state-of-the-art facility is envisioned to streamline travel for passengers heading from Chennai to the southern districts while simultaneously alleviating traffic congestion within the capital city. In the initial phase, all buses operated by the Government Rapid Transport Corporation commenced services from the new Kilambakkam facility. Subsequently, starting January 24, all private omnibuses also shifted their operations to the terminus located in the southern outskirts of Chennai. Despite the strategic move, some passengers have expressed difficulties in reaching the newly established Kilambakkam Bus Terminus. Complaints include challenges in accessibility and reported high taxi and auto-rickshaw fares, ranging from 500 to 2000 rupees, to reach the destination from the city center.
