In the midst of Coimbatore’s ongoing water crisis, BJP leader and Lok Sabha candidate for the Coimbatore constituency, K Annamalai, has lambasted the DMK government for its perceived inaction in addressing the issue. Annamalai highlighted the critical reliance of the city on the Siruvani and Pilloor dams for both drinking water and irrigation purposes, expressing concern over the significant decrease in water levels in these reservoirs.
According to Annamalai, the water level at the Siruvani dam currently stands at a mere 18 feet, a stark contrast to its full capacity of 50 feet. This depletion in water levels has exacerbated the shortage crisis, posing a grave challenge to the residents of Coimbatore.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Annamalai also criticized the State government’s silence regarding the construction of a check dam by the Kerala government near the confluence point of the Siruvani and Bhavani rivers. He expressed apprehension over the potential impact of this construction on the water supply to Coimbatore, emphasizing that the Kerala government’s plan to build additional dams for water diversion poses a direct threat to the city’s water security.
Despite the Kerala government’s progress in completing 90% of the check dam’s construction, Annamalai noted with dismay the absence of any opposition or intervention from the Tamil Nadu government. He urged the DMK government to take immediate and decisive measures to address the water shortage crisis in Coimbatore, stressing the need for transparent communication and regular updates on the status of the dams.
