The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 have delivered a mixed bag of results for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite setbacks in traditionally strong northern states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has found an unexpected lifeline in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. This surprising turn of events underscores a significant shift in the political landscape of India and challenges the long-held notion of a North-South divide in the nation’s polity. For years, the BJP has struggled to make inroads into South India, often perceived as an outsider in a region dominated by local parties with deep-rooted influence. The 2024 election results, however, indicate a paradigm shift. The BJP’s electoral success in Karnataka and Telangana, coupled with a strong performance in Andhra Pradesh, reflects a growing acceptance of the party’s ideology and governance model beyond its traditional bastions.
While Tamil Nadu remains a challenging frontier, with the BJP failing to secure a single seat, the increase in the NDA’s vote share offers a glimmer of hope. Modi acknowledged the efforts of his party’s team in Tamil Nadu, emphasizing unity and the steady rise in popular support. “Several people knew that perhaps we wouldn’t be able to win any seats there but we would be united in this fight,” he stated, suggesting a strategic long-term commitment to the state.
