Sydney, July 25: Australia has announced financial sanctions and travel bans on seven Israeli individuals and a youth group linked to violent attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank. The measures, imposed under Magnitsky-style sanctions, reflect Canberra’s condemnation of settler violence and settlement activities deemed illegal under international law.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong revealed the sanctions on Thursday, citing severe abuses including beatings, sexual assault, and torture. The sanctioned group, known as Hilltop Youth, is described as a radical organization involved in inciting and committing violence against Palestinian communities.
āThese individuals and groups have engaged in serious violations of human rights,ā Wong stated. āWe call on Israel to address settler violence and halt its settlement activities, which undermine peace and stability.ā
The sanctions align with Australia’s commitment to a two-state solution and follow recent international legal rulings against Israeli occupation. Wong emphasized that while Australia seeks a just peace, it also aims to penalize those contributing to violence.
In response, the Israeli embassy in Canberra condemned the violence but reiterated that Israel is a law-abiding state committed to justice.
The UN International Court of Justice recently called for an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories, adding pressure on Israel regarding its policies in the region.
Wong assured that Australia would maintain diplomatic engagement with Israel while continuing to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The situation remains critical, with recent concerns over the discovery of poliovirus in Gaza’s wastewater.
The Australian governmentās decision underscores its stance on human rights and its role in advocating for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
