In a significant move to enhance accountability and streamline operations, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran has issued a directive mandating the installation of GPS devices in all Corporation vehicles. This initiative applies to a wide range of vehicles, including garbage trucks, backhoes, and mechanical sweepers. The Chennai Corporation oversees a fleet of 2,886 vehicles used primarily for garbage collection and other essential services. The decision to install GPS devices follows complaints that some drivers were abandoning their duties mid-shift for personal reasons, leading to service disruptions and inefficiencies.
To address these concerns, Commissioner Kumaragurubaran has ordered that GPS tracking be implemented across the entire fleet. The GPS devices will allow for real-time monitoring of vehicle locations and provide detailed trip histories, ensuring that vehicles are being used efficiently and for their intended purposes.
This move is expected to significantly improve the management of Chennai’s waste collection and other services, reducing delays and ensuring that resources are deployed where they are needed most. The installation of GPS systems will also enable better oversight and quicker response times to any issues that arise during the vehicles’ operations.
