AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran has issued a statement urging the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider its reported plan to raise the retirement age of state government employees from 60 to 62 years. This proposal has sparked concern among various stakeholders, including government employee unions and job seekers.Recent reports indicate that the Tamil Nadu government is considering this move, which would affect the retirement timeline of around 40% of state employees who are set to retire in the coming years. According to government employee unions, the decision is allegedly driven by the state’s financial constraints in providing retirement benefits to these employees.
Dhinakaran highlighted the potential impact of this decision on the state’s youth, noting that over 8 million individuals are currently registered with employment offices, waiting for government job opportunities. He expressed concern that raising the retirement age would further delay these opportunities, jeopardizing the future prospects of lakhs of young people.
“The future of lakhs of youth is at risk of being disrupted. Therefore, the government should reconsider and abandon this decision,” Dhinakaran urged in his statement.
