New Delhi, Aug 28: Jay Shah, the current secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected unopposed as the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).He will officially assume the role on December 1, becoming the youngest person to hold this position at the age of 36.
In a statement released by the ICC, Shah expressed his commitment to expanding the global reach of cricket, especially with the sport’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. He highlighted this milestone as a pivotal moment for cricket’s growth on the international stage.
“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said. “I am dedicated to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a crucial juncture where balancing multiple formats, promoting advanced technologies, and introducing our marquee events to new global markets is essential. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”
Shah emphasized the need for innovation and fresh thinking to elevate the sport’s appeal worldwide. He believes that cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics represents a significant opportunity for the sport’s future.
Jay Shah, who has been the BCCI Secretary since October 2019 and the Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, joins the ranks of prominent Indians like Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar, who have previously chaired the global cricketing body.
