Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan addressed the media in Trichy yesterday, announcing a significant event and voicing his strong stance on the issue of alcohol and drug prohibition in India.
Thirumavalavan revealed that on October 2nd, a Women’s Conference focused on drug and alcohol prohibition will be held in Kallakurichi. The conference aims to emphasize the need for declaring nationwide prohibition as a national policy and to urge stricter control over the circulation of drugs across the country.
In the lead-up to this conference, Thirumavalavan announced his plans to embark on a statewide tour to raise awareness about these issues. The tour will focus on uniting secular parties and organizations across Tamil Nadu to spread the message of prohibition and to gather support for the cause.
During the press conference, Thirumavalavan criticized the failure of state governments to implement the recommendations of a committee established during the Congress regime, which had advocated for national prohibition and urged cooperation from state governments. He lamented that these recommendations have been ignored due to lack of cooperation, leaving them unimplemented.
Thirumavalavan highlighted that, except for a few states, most governments in India are involved in the sale of alcohol, treating it as a significant source of revenue. He criticized the state governments for prioritizing revenue generation through alcohol sales while neglecting to allocate adequate funds to protect the people and families harmed by alcohol consumption.
Thirumavalavan strongly argued that only a complete prohibition could effectively control the illicit liquor trade. He accused state governments of neglecting the issue of illicit liquor because of their involvement in the sale of what is termed “good liquor.” According to him, this involvement has led to a lack of concern from both the government and administrative bodies regarding the problems posed by illicit liquor.
