The Tamil Nadu government is under intense scrutiny following the tragic deaths of five spectators and the hospitalization of over 200 during an Indian Air Force (IAF) air show held at Marina Beach on Sunday. The event, organized to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the IAF, turned chaotic as thousands of attendees were left struggling with overcrowding, traffic jams, and a lack of basic amenities amid sweltering heat.
The situation took a grim turn as many spectators fainted from heat exhaustion and dehydration, prompting emergency services to rush them to nearby hospitals. The chaotic scenes unfolded as the crowd swelled to unmanageable levels, with traffic gridlocks exacerbating the situation.
One of the victims, 34-year-old V. Karthikeyan from RMV Nagar, Thiruvottiyur, fainted while walking along Rajaji Road with his wife and young child. He was immediately taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
In another incident, 56-year-old D. John from Korukkupet, who had come with his wife and nephew, collapsed near the Parthasarathy arch on Kamarajar Salai. Alongside him, another man, Srinivasan from Perungalathur, also fainted. Both were rushed to the Government Omandurar Multispeciality Hospital, but unfortunately, their lives could not be saved.
Additionally, a man in his late thirties, identified as Dinesh Kumar, was found deceased on the sands of Marina Beach. His body was sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Authorities reported that nearly 100 individuals sought medical treatment for dizziness and dehydration.
As criticism mounted from opposition parties and calls for accountability grew louder, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian defended the state government’s preparations. Responding to accusations of poor planning, Subramanian asserted that the state had made every effort to meet and exceed the IAF’s requirements for the event.
“The state government formed two medical teams with doctors and nurses for emergency response. The Army also sent medical teams, and 40 ambulances were on-site. We had 100 beds and 65 doctors ready at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for any emergency,” Subramanian explained in a statement.
The health minister added that the state had gone above and beyond to ensure public safety, emphasizing that medical teams were stationed at multiple points to handle emergencies, and hospitals were on high alert. Despite these assurances, the scale of the event and the sheer size of the crowd posed challenges.
Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai led the charge, blasting the DMK government for its failure to ensure public safety. Describing the deaths and injuries as preventable, Annamalai accused the state administration of negligence.
“I was shocked to hear that five people died due to crowding, and more than 200 people were injured and admitted to the hospital during the IAF air show. The only reason for this is that the DMK government did not take care of public safety, failing to provide basic facilities and adequate transport arrangements,” Annamalai wrote in Tamil on X (formerly Twitter).
The BJP leader further sharpened his criticism, directly targeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin for the tragic incident, calling it a “complete failure of administration.”
“The fact that Chief Minister MK Stalin can organise events for his own promotion but didn’t make proper arrangements for such a large public event is telling. This can’t be dismissed as only an accident; it’s administrative failure,” Annamalai said.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of five people during the Indian Air Force (IAF) air show at Chennai’s Marina Beach. In a strong statement, EPS criticized the state government for failing to provide adequate safety measures, leading to the unfortunate incident.
He condemned the government for its negligence, stating that despite claims of proper arrangements, basic necessities like drinking water were unavailable for the attendees. EPS pointed out that the government had failed to effectively organize such an important event, resulting in the tragic loss of lives.
Meanwhile, VCK leader Aadhav Arjuna, the party’s deputy general secretary, expressed outrage, stating that the government’s negligence transformed what should have been a celebratory event into a tragic ordeal.
In a post on social media, Arjuna highlighted the lack of foresight from the government regarding the anticipated crowd at the event. “The government failed to recognize that such a large gathering at Marina Beach would lead to severe oxygen depletion in the sweltering heat. With over ten lakh people in attendance, dehydration and fainting spells were inevitable, and some individuals even suffered heart attacks. This is a scientific reality,” he asserted.
Arjuna criticized the state administration for permitting public access to the event without adequate preparations in place. He emphasized that the government should have made arrangements for essential facilities like drinking water, given the massive influx of attendees.
