With several major festivals approaching, Tamil Nadu’s State Transport Corporations have begun the process of hiring temporary workers to manage the expected surge in passenger traffic. The state’s eight transport corporations currently employ around 1.21 lakh people, including drivers, conductors, and mechanical staff. However, over the past few years, several permanent vacancies have remained unfilled.
This has led to a significant shortage of around 30% in the drivers and conductors divisions. As festivals such as Ayudha Pooja, Diwali, and Pongal are just around the corner, the need for extra buses to manage the increased demand is pressing.
To address this, the transport corporations have decided to appoint temporary staff to ensure smooth operations during the festival period.
Speaking on the matter, officials from the State Transport Corporations said, “We are taking the necessary steps to ensure buses are operated without any inconvenience to passengers. To immediately resolve the employee shortage, temporary workers will be appointed, and buses will run without disruption. Over 1,600 temporary workers will be hired in each corporation. Once permanent staff are appointed, temporary workers will be phased out.”
However, representatives from transport unions expressed concerns, stating, “Hiring temporary workers is not a permanent solution. Since work is not guaranteed every day, few people are interested in taking up these jobs. Additionally, temporary workers often struggle to manage buses in large cities like Chennai. Ensuring the safety of passengers with temporary drivers is challenging. Therefore, the government must address the issue by appointing permanent staff.”
Their concerns highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining reliable transport services and ensuring passenger safety during peak seasons.
