Tamil Nadu witnessed 82 injuries from firecracker-related incidents on Deepavali morning, as per the latest reports available until 12 p.m. Thursday. The state’s celebration of the festival was marked by the traditional bursting of fireworks, a common practice that also carries risks.
The injuries occurred as people across Tamil Nadu celebrated the festival, and emergency services remained on high alert. Among the 82 injured, a significant number were treated for burns, eye injuries, and minor trauma resulting from firecracker mishaps. Many injuries were reported in densely populated areas where large gatherings heightened the chances of accidents.
Health authorities stated that emergency units at hospitals were prepared for a higher influx of patients due to the festival, with several burn and eye care wards on standby to handle cracker-related injuries.
In addition to individual injuries, a fire incident in one area caused an estimated Rs. 5,000 worth of damage to property. While this incident was contained swiftly, reports indicated that other fire-related accidents had occurred in different parts of Tamil Nadu. Specifically, 11 fire accidents unrelated to firecrackers were reported, adding to the challenges for emergency responders.
In response to past incidents, the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department had launched safety campaigns and awareness drives across the state to minimize accidents. Local authorities had also advised residents to be cautious, use designated open spaces for fireworks, and supervise children while bursting crackers. Despite these efforts, incidents still occurred, highlighting the ongoing need for caution and vigilance during the festival season.
The injuries and accidents reported on Deepavali emphasize the risks associated with the festival’s traditional celebrations. Authorities have urged the public to prioritize safety and follow guidelines to ensure that the festival remains a joyful occasion
